Immersive Performances Showcasing Fuzhou’s New Charm via Digital Technology
In recent years, with the accelerated development of digital Fuzhou, a growing number of immersive performances have emerged, providing high-quality cultural experiences for both locals and tourists, and becoming a new trend in the city’s cultural and tourism market.
These immersive performances blend China-chic trends with history and culture, incorporating elements of Fuzhou culture. By employing cutting-edge digital technology and multidimensional experiential approaches, they offer visitors a completely new cultural and tourism experience, presenting the new charm of the millennium-old Fuzhou in the digital age.
Experiencing China’s modern shipbuilding history aboard a “time machine”
“Seated in a moving chair, it felt like boarding a time machine, where various scenes unfolded through dynamic changes like stretching, withdrawing, rising, and falling. Combined with the thrilling narrative of China’s modern shipbuilding history, it was an unforgettable and exhilarating experience,” said Zhang Yi, a tourist from Guangdong, after watching The Glory Belongs to Foochow Arsenal, China’s first folding progressive multidimensional experience play, at Foochow Arsenal.
Over a year ago, The Glory Belongs to Foochow Arsenal officially premiered. This play made extensive use of AI technology in its creation and design, utilizing information information to coordinate lighting, sound, stage design, and mechanical systems. It also featured advanced technologies such as glasses-free 3D, 360-degree holographic screen projection, fog screen projection, and floor projection, seamlessly connecting the square, workshop, and dock spaces to create an entirely new multi-dimensional sensory experience.
Audiences aren’t just watching a performance anymore; they feel as if they’ve traveled through time and become part of the shipbuilding history. They experience the journey with a young student from the late Qing Dynasty’s Shipbuilding Institution, immersing themselves in the rich legacy of over a century of shipbuilding.
The use of digital technology has enhanced the stage experience of The Glory Belongs to Foochow Arsenal. Last year, the production was recognized as an excellent case of new technology applications in national red tourism and a model case for provincial digital cultural tourism applications. The immersive show has drawn a large number of visitors, and so far, it has been performed more than 500 times, attracting around 100,000 visitors.
Becoming a legendary detective in the Tang Dynasty, a thousand years ago
The moment visitors put on the VR headset and step into the experience zone, they instantly travel back to the Tang Dynasty a thousand years ago. They will team up with characters from the story, Su Wuming, the trusted disciple of Di Renjie, and Lu Lingfeng, as they dive into a thrilling immersive adventure to unravel mysteries and solve strange cases together... During this year’s Qingming Festival, the Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty: To the West China-chic immersive theater at No. 16 Wenru Lane in Sanfang Qixiang was packed with a steady stream of visitors.
As the first of its kind in Fujian, the Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty China-chic immersive theater uses next-generation VR technology along with full-sensory devices and film-level set designs. This allows visitors to experience virtual environments with sensations like wind, mist, and heat, fully immersing them in the experience. Here, visitors can gaze up at a bright moon and twinkling stars, while in front of them stretches a flowing river, a lively night market, and grand palaces - making it feel as though they’ve stepped straight into the Tang Dynasty. The highlight comes when chasing the “water monkey” on a boat, with gusts of wind, mist, and the thrill of swooping and flying. The strong push-back feeling and the bumps along the way have everyone amazed by the “incredible attention to detail.”
This is a new cultural and tourism model developed by the Fuzhou Sustainable Development Research Institute, affiliated with the Fuzhou Yecheng Group, in Sanfang Qixiang. In the 1,600-square-meter space at No. 16 Wenru Lane, centered around the 200-square-meter Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty theater, the operator has crafted a distinctive model, creating a “VR+” complex that blends cultural and creative spaces, tea-drinking areas, and ancient-style makeup spaces. This innovative setup offers visitors various ways to explore the alleys and lanes, unlocking new consumption experiences.
From Fuzhou to the Antarctica in an instant
Not long ago, the Fuzhou Science and Technology Museum held the “Immersive in the Extremes - Setting Sail to Antarctica” LBE immersive large-space special exhibition, offering visitors a unique experience of “reaching the Antarctic in one second.”
Experience the ice-breaking journey aboard the MV Xue Long 2, and chat with polar penguins... This immersive large-space exhibition uses cutting-edge LBE immersive large-space VR technology and highly realistic virtual reality technology to create a fully interactive experience space that brings the Antarctic scientific expedition to life.
Visitors can be instantly transported to Antarctica, as if they’ve traveled through time and space. Surrounded by glaciers, snowfields, and the aurora, they’ll be fully immersed in the stunning beauty of Antarctica, exploring the magical polar landscape.
In recent years, more and more digital technology achievements have been applied in Fuzhou, with more and more high-quality immersive performances becoming increasingly popular among residents. Productions such as The Most Beautiful Jasmine Flower, The Song of Pingpo, Dream Seeking: The Millennium-old Minyue, and The Story of Female Independence have all received high praise from the public.
Digital technologies are continuously being integrated into new cultural and tourism scenarios, bringing immersive experiences to visitors. At the former residence of Lin Juemin · Bing Xin, digital technology recreates the emotional moment when Lin Juemin wrote his famous A Letter to My Wife in a riverside building in Hong Kong. In Sanfang Qixiang, the “Digital Alley Narrator” AR guide provides vivid and engaging commentary for visitors; at Minjiang Heart, visitors can enjoy a unique fireworks display via the “Fuyuan Universe” app; and through the metaverse-based educational program in Yan Fu’s former hometown, children can experience Yan Fu’s legendary life from his youth to his return to his hometown via AR technology.
An increasing number of digital applications are bringing new life to the thousand-year-old city of Fuzhou, infusing its rich heritage with fresh charm and vibrant energy.
